Despite growing up in Kansas, I was exposed to evolutionary theory by my outstanding high school biology teacher, Ken Bingman, (click here and here for more info on Ken) who sparked an early interest in science by encouraging his students to plan and develop their own experiments. As an undergraduate, I studied some science (mostly physics and astronomy), but switched to philosophy as I became more interested in metaethics and philosophy of mind. I don’t think I even realized that philosophy of science was a subject until I got to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but once exposed I found the issues endlessly fascinating. After getting my Ph.D. at Wisconsin in 2000, I taught for two years at the University of Oklahoma before coming to UBC.
