| Basic Chinese Language Courses for Non-heritage Students
Note : Sections 003 at all levels are reserved for non-heritage students
By non-heritage students , we include :
- students of non-Chinese origin, or
- students of Chinese origin who do not speak any Chinese dialect, and whose parents do not speak any Chinese dialect either.
Non-Intensive Basic Chinese I - Part I (for non-heritage students )
CHIN 101 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)
CHIN 101 is a 3-credit introductory course for non-heritage students . With communicative classroom activities, on-line practices and field trips, the course seeks to help students acquire the rudimentary knowledge of Chinese and develop basic skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in the language. By the end of the course, students are expected to have a good command of the pronunciation system and basic grammar, to be able to conduct daily conversation in simple Chinese, and to read and write short passages with an active vocabulary of about 250 simplified Chinese characters.

Non-Intensive Basic Chinese I – Part II (for non-heritage students)
CHIN 103 (3) –Term 2 (4hrs/week)
CHIN 103 is a continuation of CHIN 101 for non-heritage students. This course continues to develop students’ four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. By the end of this course, students are expected to master part of the basic grammar, to be able to communicate in some real-life situations in a Mandarin-speaking environment, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 500 simplified characters.

Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part I (for non-heritage students)
CHIN 105 (3) –Term 1 (4hrs/week)
CHIN 105 is a continuation of CHIN 103 for non-heritage students. This course continues to develop the students’ four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Lectures are coordinated with drill sessions, on-line resources and field trips to help students acquire more Chinese vocabulary, sentence patterns and syntax in an integrated, communicative approach. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend most of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 750 simplified characters.

Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part II (for non-heritage students)
CHIN 107 (3) –Term 2 (4hrs/week)
CHIN 107 is a continuation of CHIN 105 for non-heritage students. This course places emphasis on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend all of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment with accuracy and fluency, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 1000 simplified characters.

Lectures are coordinated with drill sessions, on-line resources and field trips to help students acquire more Chinese vocabulary, sentence patterns and syntax in an integrated, communicative approach. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend all of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 1000 simplified characters.
