My academic research focuses on political economy and applied economics more generally. I have worked on political institutions and their design. I have also worked on the political economy of development, political behavior, electoral campaigns and campaign finance, lobbying, and financial regulation. My primary teaching interests are in applied and political economics.
I am Canada Research Chair and Professor of Economics at the Vancouver School of Economics. I am also Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and Fellow of the Bank of Canada and of the Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR). Before joining UBC, I was Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. I received my PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 2006.
