This examination has two sections. Choose five questions from Part A and one question from Part B. The value of each question is listed with the suggested time for its completion. Please read the examination through before you write.
Each essay will be judged for its focus on the topic, its structure, its specific content, and its overall control of language and mechanics. Avoid plot summary in your answers.
Please write in ink, on one side of the page only, and on alternate lines.
Proof-read your paper before handing it in.

SECTION A (10 points each, 70 minutes)
Choose five of the following ten texts or images. In well-written separate short answers of one or two paragraphs for each passage you choose, identify the author/artist of the work from which the text or image is taken, as well as (if applicable) the title of the book or collection. Contextualize the excerpt or image, explaining how it relates to the work as a whole, or to the artist's body of work. Analyze a significant element of form or style in the passage or image, explaining how it contributes to the meaning of the work. [Nine selections follow.]
SECTION B (50 points, 70 minutes)
Write a concise, carefully-argued essay on one of the following topics.
