The course Econ 495/499 Honours Seminar/Honours Essay is a special
class for Honours students. Term 1 is devoted to classes centered on the preparation of a
solid research proposal for the Honours Thesis. In Term 2, most of the instruction takes place
in the form of personal interactions between students and the Econ 499
instructor and the student's own faculty advisor. Class meetings
resume mid-March when the students will present the results of their
empirical analysis.
This course has two intertwined objectives. First, we
will build and develop skills necessary to conduct applied economic
research and to effectively communicate the results. These skills include
library and internet researching, critical reading of economics
articles, data management, data analysis, regression analysis,
presentations, and writing for economics. Second, we will apply these
skills to production of a major empirical research project. Working with a faculty advisor, each student will
prepare an Essay and defend it in front of a committee of three faculty
members.
There will be assignments throughout the year. Also,
there will be a schedule for completion steps for the Essay. All
deadlines are firm. This course website contains important information
for the course. There are links to research resources, schedules of
presentations, assignments, and notes for the course.
