SKETCH SIMPLE OBJECTS IN PERSPECTIVE

description by Robert Gardiner, the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

Introduction

The purpose of this exercise is to practice perspective sketching. You may wish to read An explanation of perspective basics first.

The Exercise

Assemble some still-lifes of simple objects that are "geometric and regular" as distinct from "curvy and organic:" books, bars of soap, bowls, etc are good; apples, pebbles, fallen leaves, etc. are not so good. Draw these arrangements. Start by making lightly sketched "bounding boxs" (in correct perspective) that will contain each object. Then draw the objects to fit within the bounding boxes. Try using your pencil to shade the parts of the objects that are darker, and the shadows that they cast on things near them.
