Introduction Costume designers use preliminaries in much the same way as set designers - as a tool for communicating ideas. For a costume designer, a preliminary may represent a more advanced stage in the design process, being a pencil underdrawing for a final painted rendering of the costume. Most costume designers think in colour to start with, and have less use than set designers for a "black and white" step in the evolution of the design. However, the colour of a costume will often depend on available fabric or stock items, so costume designers frequently draw a silhouette and a bit of detail in pencil and then do some shopping before finalizing colour.
