A Close Reading -- English 222, section 002, Fall 2015

Choose ONE of the following two poems: "Lament for the Dorsets" by Al Purdy (page 277 in your anthology) OR "History Lesson" by Jeannette Armstrong (page 597 in your anthology). In an essay of NO MORE than 1500 words (4 to 5 typed, double-spaced pages), present a close reading of that poem. You must have a clear, focused argument or thesis for your reading: what is the central claim of your interpretation? What, for you, is this poem about? What is it trying to accomplish as writing? How do you read this text, and why is that reading significant? What aspects of the language draw your attention when you read it? (Note, for example, that both poems deal with encounters between native and non-native cultures.) Remember to examine directly the relationship(s) between form and meaning. How do the style and the structure of the poem you've chosen contribute to what it articulates? What is a key concept put at issue in this text? How? Why?

You're not required to use any secondary sources for this essay, but if you do consult other sources, please cite properly, following the current MLA style for format and documentation.

Due in class on Monday, October 5. (Please note that the due date for this assignment has been slightly extended from what it was.)
