Once he had won this victory with the help of the Saxons, Vortigern increased his gifts to them. To their leader Hengest he gave many lands in the neighbourhood of Lindsey, so that he could maintain himself and his fellow-soldiers. [VI.11]
LINDSEY, the ancient name for north Lincolnshire, appears in the Historia as a grant to the Saxon Hengest. It seems likely that Hengest's fortress of THANCEASTRE, whose acquisition is described shortly after the section quoted above, is to be found in Lindsey. Geoffrey remarks later that LINCOLN is found in this province [IX.3].
